Forecast Discussion: Updated Friday, June 22, 2018 ** OZONE HEALTH WATCH FRIDAY, JUNE 22, 2018 AND MONDAY JUNE 25, 2018** The ozone levels in Apache Junction yesterday reached the health standard (100 AQI) but thankfully didn’t exceed it. The forecasted ozone level for Apache Junction today is in the upper range of the moderate AQI category which is in the ozone health watch range. Anyone with respiratory and/or heart ailments should limit outdoor activities during the afternoon and early evening hours when ozone levels are at their highest. Additionally, limit polluting activities such as refueling vehicles, idling vehicles and using drive-thru windows; if possible and available carpool and/or vanpool in order to reduce the number of automobiles on the road. An upper level low pressure system will pass well to our north and east this weekend. The noticeable effects will be a slight drop in afternoon high temperatures and breeziness. Some spotty blowing dust is possible, however the PM10 forecast for this weekend for most areas are in the good AQI category with the usual spots (Hidden Valley, Stanfield) in the moderate AQI category. The winds will be out of a southwesterly direction during the afternoon hours and so the forecasted ozone levels are lower (upper good to mid-moderate). Less in the way of winds early next week will help bring the elevated ozone levels back and so have an ozone health watch issued for Monday. The highest forecasted ozone levels for Monday may need to be increased into the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) on Monday morning, depending on the updated weather forecasts. Stay tuned. Hidden Valley will be the driver for the highest PM10 levels early next week as the 24-hour average PM10 levels in/around Hidden Valley are forecast to be in the middle to perhaps upper range of the moderate AQI category. This is mainly due to the early morning weather conditions which will be favorable for elevated PM10 levels at Hidden Valley. Stay up to date with current air pollution levels by checking the near real-time PM10, PM2.5 and ozone levels online at http://www.pinalcountyaz.gov/AirQuality/Pages/AirQualityReport.aspx.
