Forecast Discussion: Current conditions: At 2 p.m. EDT this Friday afternoon, ozone levels are on the rise across the region, and these increases are a foretaste of what is to come over the weekend into the day Monday. Tonight will be mostly clear and comfortable with low temperatures in the upper 50s. *** Saturday's forecast: With clouds and sunshine and warmer air coming in on Saturday, ozone concentrations will soar into the code ORANGE range as winds lighten, shift to the southwest, and the air starts to recirculate. Fine particulate will also average in the moderate range with morning inversions elevating PM2.5 levels. *** Sunday's forecast: Another air quality action day for ozone will be declared Sunday as temperatures move to around 90 degrees with westerly transport of ozone and it's precursors. Code ORANGE levels are likely for ozone, and fine particulate will also be into the moderate range once more. *** Monday's forecast: Yet another action day in respect to ozone is likely Monday with slow moving and recirculating air. Monday may turn out to be the day with the poorest air quality due to the exceptionally high temperatures, lack of convective activity, and increased overall precursor emissions. Highs Monday will reach into the lower 90s. *** Extended forecast: There will be relief from the high ozone levels by Tuesday with more cloudiness and a greater chance for thunderstorms out ahead of an approaching cold front. A new area of high pressure will build in later Wednesday into Thursday with seasonably warm air, and ozone levels only reaching the moderate range.---McAuliffe
