Forecast Discussion: FORECAST SUMMARY: Tuesday, January 16th, 2018 through Monday, January 22nd, 2018 PM-2.5: 24-hour Fine Particulate concentrations will be mostly Good through Wednesday with levels increasing towards Moderate Thursday; Moderates will continue into the weekend. FORECAST DISCUSSION: Generally quiet weather conditions will be in place this week. Lake effect snows continue in the northwest prone areas Tuesday, early Wednesday but should end later Wednesday as winds turn more westerly. High pressure setting up southeast of the state will bring moderating temperatures past mid-week. A shortwave passing across the northern portion of the state could bring some scattered precipitation Thursday; otherwise, quiet conditions linger through the rest of the week. As for air quality, weaker winds Tuesday were allowing for some low-end Moderate fine particulate levels. The daily average of fine particulate may be Moderate in the southeast but generally Good levels are expected across the rest of the state. Gusty west/southwest winds develop Wednesday. Temperatures do increase; however, stronger winds will keep cooler wind chills in place. Generally Good fine particulate is expected Wednesday. By Thursday and Friday, winds decrease in speed and temperatures increase a few degrees. More widespread Moderate fine particulate levels will develop, mostly across the southern portion of the state. A warm front lifts north of the state late Saturday continuing the increase in temperatures. Surface humidity levels also start increasing as the warmer air moves over the current snow pack. Moderate fine particulate levels will be the general rule. EXTENDED FORECAST: Extended models show a storm system moving from the southern Plain states Saturday to the Great Lakes region late Sunday. Temperatures will be warm enough for rain and snow melt is expected. Generally Moderate fine particulate levels continue into Sunday; levels will improve Monday after the cold front passes and northwest winds bring cooler air in its wake.
