Forecast Discussion: July 28 to July 30 - The Soberanes wildfire continues to burn at elevations well above the cooling influence of the marine layer. Over 40 square mile have burned with containment remaining at 10% due to fire growth and the inaccessible steep terrain between Carmel Highlands and Big Sur where the fire is burning. Hot and dry conditions condition persist over the fire which continues to foster active fire both during the day and night. High pressure builds in from the Desert SW Thursday and early Friday which will keep temperatures over the fire hot while transport winds become westerly to northwesterly. This will tend to push smoke from the active fire off to the east and southeast over the Salinas Valley leading to generally improved air quality north of the fire while potentially degrading air quality in areas east and south of the fire. This includes the Central and Southern Salinas Valley and Pinnacles areas where smoke particulate (PM2.5) levels can be expected to reach the MODERATE to UNHEALHTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS categories of EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI) depending on how much of the smoke mixes down to ground-level. Over the weekend, a weak upper level trough passes through to our north which may once again push smoke to populated areas to the north. This includes the Carmel Valley and the Monterey areas where PM2.5 air quality may degrade to the MODERATE to perhaps UNHEALHTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS AQI categories. Persons sensitive to smoke should shelter in place and close windows, or if possible seek relief by leaving the area. The Air District will be cooperating with specialists from the USFS to update these assessments as the fire and related air quality impacts evolve.
