Forecast Discussion: FORECAST SUMMARY: Friday, July 29th 2016 through Monday, August 1st, 2016 Ozone: 8-hour Ozone values will be Good to Moderate during the forecast period. PM-2.5: 24-hour Fine Particulate concentrations are expected to be mostly Good to Low Moderate. FORECAST DISCUSSION: A surface low pressure system over central Indiana will be somewhat stationary through most of the weekend. With counter-clockwise winds around that low, we will have persistent easterly winds through Sunday. That means Good Air Quality along the Lake Michigan shore as any pollution over the lake will be pushed to the western side. There may be some Moderate readings west of Detroit, however the air mass passing over Detroit will be relatively clean so I do not expect much in the way of pollution accumulation. That system will move eastward by Sunday afternoon as a high pressure ridge builds in. The next best chance for any ozone creep will be on Monday, even though I do not expect excessively elevated ozone levels. Most of the state will still be under light easterly winds for most of the day. I do expect surface winds over Lake Michigan to push some pollution northward. The light easterly surface winds during Monday may not be enough to counter a lake breeze so Moderate concentrations along the lake shore are expected as well as some stagnation in Southeast Michigan. But I am not expecting any widespread USG. Although I am writing this forecast through Monday, I will review the latest computer models on Sunday to make sure conditions have not significantly changed for Monday. EXTENDED FORECAST: Another warmup and potential ozone issues are expected for the upcoming work week. Forecast updated by Jim Haywood: Friday, July 29th, 2016 Next forecast update: Monday, August 1st, 2016
