Forecast Discussion: Forecast Discussion Oct 31 to Nov 5, 2014: On Friday, the jet stream dips southward, steering a robust Pacific storm over the drought stricken Central Coast. The storm is expected to deliver moderate to heavy showers to the region Friday and Saturday. Clear skies and cooler conditions then expected through mid-week as the storm exits to the east with high pressure rebuilding in its wake. This unsettled pattern should generally promote a well-mixed atmosphere which should keep AQIs for PM2.5, PM10 and ozone in the GOOD air quality category for most areas. However, with cooler overnight temperatures and stability developing in the San Lorenzo Valley as the front departs, PM2.5 AQIs may reach the MODERATE air quality category due to residential wood smoke. Please be aware that despite recent rains, the Cal Fire SUSPENSION of OPEN BURNING in the State Responsibility Areas of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito Counties continues due to the high fire hazard caused by the long-term drought. During these drought conditions, residents are also cautioned about the high risk of causing a wildfire when starting any kind of fire near dry grass and brush. As the May-October ozone season draws to a close, it should be noted the 2014 ozone season will be the second cleanest on record for the Central Coast.
