Forecast Discussion: Friday, August 22: Mostly cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms will inhibit ozone formation in the Mahoning Valley. However, moisture associated with rain showers, fog, and mist will support particle production, and calm winds will reduce pollutant dispersion. Therefore, AQI levels will be low-Moderate. Saturday, August 23: Light and variable winds will continue to inhibit pollutant dispersion, and moisture associated with lingering rain showers and fog will continue to enhance particle formation. Therefore, despite mostly cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms limiting ozone formation, AQI levels will remain low-Moderate. Sunday through Wednesday, an upper-level ridge of high pressure will build over Ohio, reducing vertical mixing in the atmosphere. In addition, light, generally southerly winds will bring additional pollutants and moisture into the Mahoning Valley, supporting particle formation. Furthermore, partly sunny skies and afternoon temperatures in the mid-80s will enhance ozone formation. These conditions, combined with pollutant carryover from day to day, will yield Moderate AQI levels on all four days.
