Forecast Discussion: Air quality forecast northern Indiana issued Monday, June 17, 2013 for Tuesday, June 18 - Thursday, June 20. Expect moderate levels of ozone and fine particulates (PM2.5) for Monday for northern Indiana with the exception of the Fort Wayne area where ozone will remain in the good range and only PM2.5 is moderate. A cold front which is currently located across central Wisconsin and Michigan will gradually move southward through northern Indiana by Tuesday morning changing the wind direction from a southwest to a northeast to northerly direction on Tuesday and a northeast to easterly direction by Wednesday as an area of high pressure drifts eastward across Michigan on Tuesday and Wednesday. The high temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will only be in the 70s. However, when the surface high pressure moves off to the east, warmer air begins to arrive on Thursday and especially by Friday as the upper level ridge across the South Central and Southeastern United States builds northward into the Lake Michigan and northern Indiana regions. This will provide conditions which are more favorable for elevated ozone levels on Friday and continuing into the weekend. The weekend will be warm to hot with high temperatures in the upper 80s to 90, but with the airmass becoming more unstable and a frontal boundary moving southward into northern Indiana by Monday morning the potential for showers and thunderstorms will also increase during the weekend and into Monday. As a result the air quality forecast will be updated again on Thursday. Air quality forecast provide by IDEM, Office of Air Quality.
