Forecast Discussion: Forecast discussion for July 2 to 7: The large scale pattern that has been streaming upper level monsoonal moisture our way this week gradually shifts through the forecast period as the 4-Corners high gradually weakens while a closed upper level low develops off the Central Coast of California. This will result in cooler temperatures, especially inland and a strengthening of the marine layer near the coast through the 4th of July holiday weekend. This transition should be favorable for air quality with air quality over most areas expected to remain in the GOOD category of EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI). However, with the drought enhanced dry season fully upon us, PM10 AQIs in the Salinas Valley may at times reach the MODERATE category due to dry soils and windblown fugitive dust. Also, in areas where fireworks are causing ground-level smoke, PM2.5 AQIs may temporarily rise into the UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS category. Please note, due to the long-term drought CAL FIRE has SUSPENDED OPEN BURNING in the State Responsibility Areas of Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties. During these extremely dry conditions, residents are also cautioned about the high risk of causing a wildfire when using any ignition source, such as fireworks, near dry grass and brush.
