Forecast Discussion: Discussion for February 5 to 10 - A ridge of high pressure builds over California through the weekend leading to dry conditions and above normal temperatures with some daytime highs approaching record levels. The drought friendly ridge is then expected to persist with no rain through next weekend. With a high pressure regime in place and the atmosphere stabilizing, PM2.5 air quality over the region can be expected to increase reaching the upper GOOD to possibly lower MODERATE category of EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI). PM2.5 levels can also be expected to remain elevated in the San Lorenzo Valley Smoke Sensitive Area (SLV SSA) due to residential wood smoke. AQIs in the SLV SSA can generally be expected to remain in the MODERATE category through the weekend with possibly locally higher neighborhood areas where smoky chimneys are present. However, EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standard is not expected to be exceeded because overnight temperatures will be moderated by the overall warmer weather pattern. Wood burners can minimize the impact of their smoke on neighbors by following best management practices for burning including using dry seasoned wood, not over packing the fire box and building a hot efficient fire.
