Forecast Discussion: Forecast Discussion Nov 24 to 29, 2014: High pressure builds over the West Coast through mid-week, leading to clear skies, warm day-time temperatures along with chilly nights in sheltered valleys. By Thanksgiving, the ridge begins to weaken in advance of an approaching Pacific trough. This will hopefully deliver needed rainfall to the area over the weekend and into next week. Air quality for most areas should remain good during the forecast period with AQIs for PM2.5, PM10 and ozone generally remaining in the GOOD air quality category. However, in sheltered wooded valleys, such as the San Lorenzo Valley, overnight temperatures can be expected to reach the mid to lower 30’s. As a result AQIs for PM2.5 can be expected to reach the middle to upper MODERATE category, with possible excursions into the UNHEALTHY FOR SENSITIVE GROUPS category due to residential wood smoke. Please note, due to recent rains CAL FIRE has lifted its Suspension of Open Burning in the State Responsibility Areas of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito Counties. As a reminder, the backyard burn season doesn’t begin until December 1st.
