Forecast Discussion: Forecast Discussion August 20 to 25: The mid-week upper level low slowly exits the area to the southeast allowing the marine layer to remain deep with fairly typical August weather persisting over the region. Slow warming sets in during the later part of the week with the Central Coast sandwiched between an area of high pressure to the west and a deep trough over the Great Basin. This pattern should foster a shallower marine layer and earlier clearing inland. The pleasant weather pattern is expected to support continued favorable air quality over the Central Coast with AQIs for ozone, PM2.5 and PM10 remaining in the GOOD air quality category. In fact, so far it has been a rather clean year for ozone with only three days exceeding the State 8-hour ozone standard, the last one on May 15th. Please be aware that due to the extraordinarily dry conditions caused by the long-term drought, Cal Fire has SUSPENDED OPEN BURNING in the State Responsibility Areas of Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Benito Counties. During these extremely dry conditions, residents are also cautioned about the high risk of causing a wildfire when starting any kind of fire near dry grass and brush.
