Forecast Discussion: Discussion for August 28 to Sept 2 – The 4-Corners high pressure ridge that brought warm temperatures to the area weakens and drifts eastward as an approaching cold front presses in from the Pacific. This will bring cooler temperatures through the weekend and a return to onshore flow. This air mass change and associated increase in atmospheric mixing should keep air pollution levels for PM2.5, PM10 and ozone generally remaining in the GOOD category of EPA’s Air Quality Index (AQI). However, in the Salinas Valley, dry soils coupled with strong afternoon breezes may cause PM10 AQIs at King City to occasionally reach the MODERATE category due to windblown fugitive dust. Also, we can expect to continue to see lingering effects of residual smoke haze (PM2.5) from the various wildfires in California and the PacNW. The effect should mainly be visible, including continued colorful golden sunsets, but no exceedances of applicable air quality standards. Please note, due to the long-term drought, CAL FIRE has suspended open burning in all State Responsibility Areas of Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties. During these extremely dry conditions, residents are also cautioned about the high risk of causing a wildfire when using any ignition source near dry grass and brush.
