Forecast Discussion: The late summer heat wave will continue across Delaware on Tuesday, with very hot and humid conditions. Sunny skies and a stagnant air mass, with very light to calm surface winds, will allow ozone to accumulate rapidly in the afternoon, reaching the upper Moderate range. The arrival of dilute smoke from the western US wildfires will also promote ozone formation, as well as continue to push particle concentrations higher into the Moderate range. If regional ozone rises faster than expected, isolated Code Orange (Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups; USG) ozone is possible in northern Delaware. **Extended Forecast: Depending on how quickly air quality deteriorates regionally, Wednesday may be an Air Quality Action Day for Delaware for ozone; particles will continue to rise higher into the Moderate range, as hot, humid, and stagnant weather continues. A “back door” cold front may arrive from the northeast on Thursday, bringing a cleaner air mass and limiting air quality to the Moderate range. -Huff
