Forecast Discussion: Smoke from the King Fire in El Dorado County will result in locally high particle (PM2.5) levels through this week and into the weekend. Smoke impacts will be greatest in the foothills east of Sacramento during the overnight and morning hours. Wednesday, an upper-level trough of low pressure approaching the northern California coast will increase vertical mixing and produce moderate onshore winds, dispersing pollutants in the Sacramento region. As a result, ozone levels will be Good. Thursday, the upper-level trough will move into northern California, enhancing mixing and generating moderate onshore winds. These conditions will disperse pollutants. In addition, cloud cover, scattered showers, and cooler temperatures will limit ozone formation, keeping ozone levels Good. Friday, the upper-level trough will continue to enhance vertical mixing in the Sacramento region, and light to moderate northerly winds will help to disperse pollutants. However, mostly sunny skies and warmer temperatures will aid ozone formation, resulting in low-Moderate ozone levels.
