Forecast Discussion: Lingering cloud cover and clean sourcing from the southwest has kept air quality levels in the middle to upper Code GREEN range today. Tomorrow, the Triad will be in a transitional phase, sandwiched between a departing upper level trough and a developing upper level ridge. Upper level flow should generally be westerly, allowing the development of a surface trough east of the Appalachians. Lingering low-level moisture along and ahead of this boundary may result in some isolated afternoon storms, but the main issue will be elevated air quality levels accumulating along the eastern side of the boundary. Thus, we can expect ozone and particle pollution levels to jump into the upper Code GREEN and low Code YELLOW range, respectively, for Tuesday. Upper level ridging really builds across the southeastern United States on Wednesday and Thursday, effectively squashing any chances of any scattered precipitation. With a lack of upper level moisture and calming winds, we can expect air quality levels to gradually rise into the middle to upper Code YELLOW range as temperatures rise into the mid-90s.
