Forecast Discussion: OZONE: Despite wind gusts near 30 mph on Wednesday highest Valley ozone concentrations approached unhealthy levels at a few locations. The same was true at Alamo Lake in La Paz County as well as at Yuma, a situation that typically a signature of additional ozone and/or its precursors arriving from the west. However, at noon today hourly ozone concentrations at monitoring sites around the Valley were running as much as 13 parts per billion lower than those of 24 hours with only three sites running up to just three ppb higher. This would seem to indicate that this latest influx has peaked or has ended and that local ozone levels should be heading downward as a result. This ties in well with the deep south to southwesterly wind regime that has become established over the state – a directional wind component that does not usually correspond with high to unhealthy ozone levels. However, smoke from various wildfires could remain a factor in local ozone production into the weekend. Consequently, ozone levels are predicted to remain elevated during this forecast period with highest concentrations at locations to the north and northeast of the Valley population core. PARTICLES: An upper level trough in the mid-latitude storm track is now positioned over the west coast and is still slated to remain there into next week. For the Phoenix metro area this means that low-level gradients will support enhanced winds each afternoon thru this forecast period. Due to the lack of noteworthy local rainfall since April 9 – and the ongoing hot and dry conditions – some fugitive dust emissions are bound to occur at some locations during periods of gusty winds. Even so, the risk for significant blowing dust should remain low with Valley PM-10 (coarse particle) readings in or near the low-moderate range of the Air Quality Index while PM-2.5 (fine particle) concentrations stay in the good range. |
